Coarseness of the abrasives is measured by the size of the abrasive grain or grit. Abrasive grains can be:
- very coarse (grits 12-24)
- coarse (grits 30-60)
- fine (grits 70-180)
- very fine (grits 220-2500).
For example, grain of grit 60 has the same size as a grain of sugar, and grain of grit 2000 has the size of a grain of flower.
